Capecho Shrug, originally uploaded by velvetdahlia.I finally finished Norah Gaughan’s Capecho shrug, after working on it for the last five months.
I had to redo the collar and make it thinner because the original stood up to my ears and covered my chin.
The problems with fit on this pattern were universal, apparently– it is very wide and short and of course with my generous bust that was a fit challenge. I ended up kitting extra partial pentagons under the arms and at the bottom front so that my breasts would be totally covered.
The yarn I chose– Schoeller Stahl Merino Stretch– is very stretchy. It was hard to really determine gauge and now I’m thinking maybe this was the wrong yarn choice as the texture seems to muddle the stitch definition. Anyway, I’m still rather pleased with it, even though it seems to be a rather impractical garment. It is some of the more impressive looking knitting I’ve undertaken, even though the execution is actually quite simple.

How impractical can it be for you if you already owned the rest of the outfit?!! Seriously – looks like you did a great job. I LOVE your modifications. It’s a puzzle to me how many different problems folks have had with this. Differing expectations? I was wondering if some knitters had it upside down, but I never investigated.
Congrats on finishing it!

Hi Norah!
I’m so honored you would comment on my post about the shrug. I loved knitting this. Every pattern of yours I have tried has been a joyful adventure, and this one is no different. The modifications I made were not due to defects in the design but rather the fact that I usually have to add more fabric to any design to cover my bust. Given this, I am not sure why so many knitters had problems with the fit. It seemed quite straightforward (I realized while knitting it that it would be this shawl with sleeves, not a “bolero” per se. Part of me wishes I had tried it with different wool– like the one suggested in the pattern. Even though I can’t fit a coat over it (in the London cold that feels impractical– but in spring it will be perfect) it remains the most beautiful thing I’ve ever knit. I have seen women wearing this design on the streets of London and it is like this beacon of stylishness and knitting wonder. Thank you for raising the bar! I can’t wait to knit more of your designs. xoxo

Hi — I’m a bit late commenting but just found your blog and wanted to say how brilliant your Capecho shrug looks.
I’ve had this pattern on my list ever since I first saw it on the cover of Vogue Knitting, but I’m not sure I have the knitting chops to tackle it. You did a wonderful job and clearly have the style to pull it off, as well.
